The Righteous Gemstones: Five Take Aways After The Series Finale
After four fun seasons, we’ve finally said goodbye to The Righteous Gemstones. Danny McBride gave us a winner that always delivered the laughs, and at times even filled the drama gap for HBO Sunday nights (looking at you “The Idol). I’m sad to see it go.
Let’s do some take aways and talk about the Gemstones one last time.
The Milsaps were too far gone to be saved: Lets get the tough one out of the way. I know a few of us were hoping that Corey Milsap would “see the light” and that we could still swing a completely happy ending out of this. They did that with the Montgomerys last season and it turned out quite lovely. Sadly, we were wrong. Credit to the acting job by Seann William Scott for channeling some Michael Rooker anger, and reviving the “Stifler” dance moves. See you on Shifting Gears, buddy.
The Gemstones loved God: Don’t get it twisted. There was cocaine, gunfire, and marital affairs, but they were followers of the Lord. And kind of like Michael Scott in “The Office” doing the small things right, The Gemstones did the same. They always went to work.
The show held serve after the perfect ending to season 3: If you watched the season 3 finale, it was picture perfect. And I was worried the Gemstones couldn’t keep it up. Season 4 wasn’t perfect but I still feel good after the final campaign.
Walton Goggins as Baby Billy Freeman was a gift: Goodness, I’m going to miss Baby Billy. What a fun character. I’m happy the world is finally waking up to Walton Goggins and I’ll be watching Saturday Night Live. HBO is alright with me for the Goggins Sunday night double feature with “The White Lotus” and this show.
John Goodman wrapped two spectacular shows this year: He just put The Conners to bed (for a second time) and he had a heavy presence on RG. He’s been a superstar for decades, but let it be known that he was great all the way down the stretch.
Cheers to a great show. I enjoyed it a lot.
