The Handmaid’s Tale: S6E7 Shattered Recap
Welcome back! The last two weeks have kept us on the tightrope with a trunk cliffhanger and a possible betrayal. Let’s jump right into the next episode.
What Happens in “Shattered”?: We catch up with June in the closet as the guardians raid Jezebels following the reception of Nick’s information about the attack on Gilead’s commanders. They execute every girl in the club except Janine, who is capable of having children. Nick returns June to May Day after an argument, and after Luke discovers Nick’s actions, he shouts at June too. Rita meets with Nick, but Nick rejects her attempts to make him feel better about betraying June and the two part ways upset. In Serena Joy land, the other commanders wives throw here a bridal shower, where during conversation insult her promotion of New Bethlehem preferring the existing ways in Gilead. Afterwards Wharton comforts his bride to be ahead of the ceremony.
Aunt Lydia then discovers that Janine is alive and is a handmaid with the bells. Moira tries to make June feel better, with some positive results. June goes to Luke and almost gives him permission to leave her but Luke comforts her and takes her hand. Aunt Lydia attempts to see Janine but Bell turns her away hinting at abuse saying she’s “not ready for public viewing at the moment. When Lydia looks up at the window, she sees a severely beaten Janine looking at her before she’s snatched away from the window by Bell’s wife.
Lawrence then goes to May Day to visit June in an attempt to get her to recommit to destroying Gilead. He does this by letting her know that Janine survived the raid at Jezebels. This inspires her to pitch an attack to May Day which would take place at Serena Joy’s weapons. We see Lawrence and Rita get the plan rolling though a montage. Lawrence sends Lydia on an errand while Aunt Phoebe discovers Moira and June in his trunk once again. She is revealed to be an ally saying “Let the revolution begin.”. She stashes June and Moira in their cellar after telling them that the handmaids have been briefed on the attack. As the episode ends the duo pledges to kill everyone responsible for their misery.
Trivia and Tie-Ins:
Yeah, that’s D’arcy Carden from “The Good Place”, “Barry” and “Nobody Wants This” as Aunt Phoebe. She’s a great addition to any cast.
Yeah, that was Barracuda by Heart playing during the credits. A little overused but still a classic.
