The Handmaid’s Tale: S6E8 “Exodus” Recap

The wedding of the dystopian season is here, and as The Handmaid’s Tale rides a solid creative wave into the homestretch, there is still a lot left to resolve.

What Happened?: The episode wastes no time getting to the suspense, as we see an undercover June and Moira join the handmaids as they leave for the Serena Joy and High Command Wharton wedding. During the ceremony they try to pass around weapons but one of them is dropped and they have to hold off until the reception, where the sleep inducing, drug laced cake will be served.

At the reception, Serena Joy gathers the handmaids and indirectly mentions June in her well-meaning but ineffective inspirational speech to the handmaids. When Aunt Lydia arrives, she almost catches June but thanks to Lawrence and Aunt Phoebe, June escapes.

All is not well with the newlyweds. When Serena Joy arrives home, there is a handmaid waiting for her and Wharton. When Serena refuses to host the handmaid, she gets in a fight with Wharton, takes Noah, and is last seen leaving the home.

Back at the reception, Lydia is still suspicious and spots all of the wedding cake uneaten by the handmaids and stomps away towards the Red Center.

June heads to Commander Bell’s house to rescue Janine. A drowsy Bell can only say hello before June sticks a utensil in his eyeball socket and kills him, before finishing his drink. She reunites with Janine and escapes.

Back at the red center, Lydia has determined that something is going on and alerts one of the guardians. As Moira confronts Lydia, June and Janine also arrive, and the two actually convince the series long antagonist to let the handmaids escape into the night as the credits pop.
