Green Bay Should Rally Around Bipartisan Push For Court Resources

On Tuesday, a bipartisan group of state lawmakers held a press conference to announce a budget proposal to expand court resources in Brown County (story HERE). This would include two more judges, three assistant DAs, more court reporters and more support staff for the public defender.

If you’re in Brown County, you should support this push.

We’re experiencing a ridiculous backlog of court cases. This costs you more money because we have to house these suspects. When you look at the numbers involved in the presentation it feels like we’re leaking funds. It’s almost panic inducing.

Over the past couple of years, I’ve worked a few security jobs in the Greater Green Bay area. This means I observe the police and watch a lot of these cases move through the system. This process moves ridiculously slow. There were a couple of times when I’ve been attacked, and have been around victims of some very nasty crimes. There are still cases from over two years ago that we’re still waiting to resolve.

And this brings us to the very important point of closure for victims. There are people affected by violence or an invasion of their private spaces that won’t feel whole until these cases are closed. It takes an emotional toll. We need that closure.

When coupled with the financial aspects, this affects everyone in the community and we all should support our lawmakers on this.

And while this all seems like common sense, the budget process is complicated. Nothing is guaranteed.

Let’s makes some noise and tell our state lawmakers that we support them in making sure our justice system has everything it needs.
