The Waterfront: S1E1 “Almost Okay” Recap
It’s The Waterfront on Netflix. Here we go with the premiere!
What Happened on “Almost Okay?”: Our cold open gives us a hijacking. The boat appears to be carrying some kind of drug shipment. The attackers take the boat and throw the two person crew overboard before the title screen.
We’re then taken to a beautiful …waterfront town where we meet Cane Buckley and his daughter and lovely wife Peyton. Cane is obsessed over his phone were a text conversation has gone silent. When he gets to the beach, the Miss Glory has crashed ashore and the DEA is there. We learn that Cane owns the boat and that the Buckley family owns a big fisherie in town.
Next up is patriarch Harlan, who has a heart scare with his mistress who his wife, Belle, also apparently knows about. Harlan knows about the boat and is trying to find answers from his hospital bed.
We see Cane switch the name on the boat deed before catching up with Belle. Cane inherited all of this trouble from Harlan and is ticked off.
And then there is Bree, the younger sister, who tries to see her son but is shooed off by her ex who threatens to call the cops.
Bree and Cane meet up at the dock where DEA Agent Marcus Sanchez is waiting to talk about the boat. Cane hypes up the sale he just created and Sanchez leaves. As soon as he walks in his officer, Harlan punches him to the floor and demands answers. We learn the family operation is upside down which is why Cane was running drugs for Hoyt Piper. The stolen haul was worth $10 million.
Cane catches up with Hoyt who is already under pressure. We learn about the big boss named Owen, who will eventually reach out to Cane when he’s ready. Cane catches up with an old flame in Jenna and we get some sparks before they agree to catch up later.
Belle tells Harlan that the family is broke and they stand to lose everything. She’s in on the drug shipping with a couple of others. Peyton and Cane also talk about Jenna, and that she’s fond that her husband still keeps in touch with her. The next morning we get a catch-up, relationship building segment with Jenna and Cane before the family regroups back at the fishery. Harlan declares he’s taking back control and tells Cane to fetch Hoyt.
The father and son actually kidnap Hoyt on the boat. Then they chum up the water to draw the sharks before he finally tells them he’s hidden the stolen drugs.
Bree has a supervised dinner with her son, Diller. And he turns out to be a complete little jerk. And the two don’t get along at all.
Next, Harlan and Cane take Hoyt to the shack with the drugs but the cops stumble upon them. It’s Clyde the sheriff, who turns out to be crooked. He kills Hoyt and it turns out that Clyde is actually boss, Owen. The Buckley’s now work for him and their first job is to get rid of Hoyt’s body.
We catch up with Bree and Diller and learn that Bree burned down their last family house during the split up. We also discover she bought Diller a bunch of shoes. She tries to tell her son she loves him but stops.
Cane goes to visit Jenna but she refuses him. We get a short but affectionate exchange between Harlan and Belle before we go back to Bree.
She’s actually an informant for DEA Agent Sanchez.
