The Waterfront: S1E2 “Taking Control” Recap

Episode two of The Waterfront on Netflix. Let’s not waste anytime. Here we go!

What happens on episode two titled “Taking Control”: Uh oh. The Coast Guard has found the bodies of our two dead sailors Troy and Curts from the premiere which could link the Buckley’s to dirty cop, Clyde/Owen’s drugs.

Shawn the bartender rolls up to the scene which includes Cane, Marcus Sanchez and Owen who is glaring at Cane and not too happy with what’s going on. Shawn starts talking to Cane who snaps on him before walking away.

We catch up with Belle, who is working with a developer on a coastal project. He makes a soft pass at her before she moves the tour along.

Owen is anything but soft about his demands. He says Harlan and Cane will finish the delivery before they all get in trouble against the protest for our dysfunctional father and son.

And then there is our dysfunctional mother and son. It turns out that Harlan hired Diller to work at the fishery. This puts the squeeze on Bree who is still under a court order for only supervised visits. But she refuses to fire him.

Belle tells Harlan and Cane their $6.8 million dollars in debt. They refuse layoffs but do consider knocking off Clyde/Owen Porter. The alternative is Belle’s land deal but Harlan shoves it away. Even though it’s basically done anyway.

Oh, and Bree and Agent Sanchez are hooking up in a hotel room. And Sanchez is also an addict. The two hold an impromptu AA meeting but instead learn that Bree wants Cane locked up. Sanchez, a former heroin addict only has a couple of days to get an arrest before he has to leave.

At the restaurant, Belle and Harlan have a heart to heart about their marriage with the latter apologizing. They also believe Shawn could be an informant. Peyton also wants to make more plans with Jenna as she plans with Cane.

Harlan and Cane head off with the drugs to meet the buyer. Harlan gives Cane an empty gun and tells him to watch himself. Belle questions Shawn, gets lousy answers and grows further suspicious.

Bree breaks into Cane’s computer but is interrupted by that little jerk, Diller. She tells her son that he needs to tell his dad that he’s working there or she could get in trouble. They cut a deal.

At the exchange, the Buckleys come up short with the drugs and Cane convinces the thugs to call Porter. The thugs actually give us a new name “Grady” and the exchange is completed with no one dying.

At dinner the developer (Wes) makes another soft pass at Belle, but although still a rejection, the two appear to grow closer. Cane meets up with Jenna and they take shots and gummies before her husband, Scott, and Peyton join them. The dinner gets tense when they all start discussing their personal histories.

We get a short break from that table and Belle actually kisses Wes but ends the night without further activity.

Back at dinner, both Scott and Peyton get frustrated with their partners and leave. Cane and Jenna decide it might be best not to do anymore dinners.

Harlan confronts Porter about the shorted shipment and punches him. Porter describes the night Grandpa Buckley died. Bree was apparently involved and covered in blood.

Leaving dinner, Peyton tells Cane he’s turning into his father and threatens to leave him.

Cane and Harlan have it out at the Marina, but appear to want to get to Grady and muscle out Porter. Bree gives Marcus Sanchez the thumb drive implicating Cane in the drug trade.

And Belle confronts Shawn when she catches him arguing on the phone. He reveals that he’s Harlan’s son from an affair.

To close the episode we see Peyton walking up her driveway when she’s confronted by thugs who drench her in gasoline and light the match as the credits pop.

Quotes:

Cane (when the drugs come up short): “Goddam* metric system.”

Wes: “I finally came to the realization that you can’t get everything from one person.”

Cane (getting asked about the disastrous dinner): “It’s a little funny.”

Cane (to Harlan): “I think we can both acknowledge I’m the reason we didn’t get killed today.”

Harlan: “You’re a fool.”
Cane: “At least I’m not you.”

Observations and Trivia:

Diller might be one of the most unlikable characters I’ve met this year.

Cane drinking bourbon and Scott drinking a martini is good contrast.

Maria Bello was opposite of Mel Gibson in “Payback”. His name in that movie? Porter.
