The Waterfront: S1E3 “Playing With Fire” Recap

It’s episode three of “The Waterfront” which looks to pick up on a fiery cliffhanger. If you’d like and episode two recap you can read that HERE.

What happened on Episode Three “Playing with Fire”?: Picking up right where the last episode left off, we hear Peyton screaming as she’s soaked with gasoline. But the thugs stop the fire right before it gets to her. Harlan and Cane believe it was Sheriff Owen Porter sending a message after Harlan knocked him out.

Harlan wastes no time and goes to confront Porter at the police station. He maintains his stance that he won’t run anymore drugs until he meets Grady. Porter plays it dumb and dismisses him.

Back at home, Peyton has got herself a gun and leaves home with their daughter.

Bree visits Marcus who believes he can lock up the family if he gets on the boat and catches Cane during a drug run.

Shawn and Belle catch up after the discovery that he is Buckely’s son. Belle shows him pictures of his mom. The two were actually friends. Shawn tells us the only other person he has is his boyfriend and the two decide to wait to tell Harlan.

Bree sneaks Marcus on the boat to plant a bug, while Harlan pulls Cane aside and we discover that he’s caught the thugs that tried to light Peyton on fire. Harlan hands Cane a crowbar and tells him to rough them up but his son refuses. As he leaves Harlan decides to do it himself with the other thugs.

Porter comes to the restaurant and threatens Belle if she doesn’t get her husband in line. At the same time Reggie Miller the thug almost catches Bree and Marcus but Bree distracts him while Marcus escapes.

Cane visits Jenna at her hardware store. They share a drink and we learn her husband Scott and took off to get away from her sick father.

Harlan visits Porter with a bottle of whiskey and the two try to patch things up. This, as Belle ends up hooking up with Wes the developer in his hotel room.

The Buckley girls continue having a tough episode. The bug planted on the boat doesn’t give Marcus’ boss enough and he has to surrender the investigation and leave.

Cane gets home and somewhat reconciles with Peyton. Two people who don’t reconcile are Harlan and Clyde Porter. While things appear to go well at first, Porter refuses to connect Harlan to Grady, and the two begin fighting. Harlan stabs Porter in the throat with a screwdriver and appears to start having chest pains as the credits pop.

Trivia and Observations

One of the Buckley family’s thugs is called Reggie Miller, just like the Hall Of Fame NBA player.

This is the second Netflix show I’ve seen play up the illegitimate child of a rich family. Here we have Shawn. “Running Point” also has their own similar plot.

Belle ended up being right about Shawn’s shady background though.

Bree gooning over Shawn looks totally different than it did 15 minutes into the series.

Everyone’s drinking whiskey all the way until “Tennessee Whiskey” by Christ Stapleton (great song btw) plays. Then Belle is drinking white wine.

Leave the gun. Take the whiskey. That’s what I thought of when Harlan goes to see Porter.

Porter. Clyde. Owen. Way too may names. Not that it matters now.

Quotes:

Jenna: “How is Peyton? Does she hate me?”
Cane: “No. She totally supports me doing recreational drugs with old girlfriends.”
