Getting Into Politics: Explaining Your Story And Defining Your Reasons

One of the first things I like to do when I start working with a new team or get a new partner is to learn why.

“Why are you taking time out of your too short life to get involved in politics?”

The answers I’ve gotten have varied to an “I don’t know” to a story that lasted half a day.

So, I’ve got to ask you the same question.

Yeah, I’m words on a screen but there is an excellent chance that on day one or two you’re going to get asked about it.

And you should at least have a bare bones reason why. If you don’t, then I’ll help you define one right now.

What are you passionate about? What did you see from this particular campaign or operation that spoke to your heart? Is there a personal experience that caused you to get involved?

It doesn’t have to be Shakespeare or Spielberg? It doesn’t have to be a
West Wing or House Of Cards spin off. It just has to be real.

I’ve told my story a few times. I was lost after I got out of the military. Setback after setback. The transition period for me was a total failure and I never really recovered. I knew I had to get involved so that my brothers and sisters that are still in the military wouldn’t have to experience the same heartbreak that I did.

And years later, here I am.

I’ve met volunteers and operatives that are passionate about education, the environment, the second amendment, labor laws. There really aren’t any wrong answers.

Because you’re speaking from your heart.

And in this business, when everything is going wrong, it’s what comes from your heart that will save you.

What is your personal story? Let me know in the comments.
