Countdown: S1E1 “Teeth In The Bone” Premiere Recap

Where Soldier Boy goes, I will follow. Or Jensen Ackles in this case who has been entertaining some of us for over 20 years now. Countdown from Amazon Prime has arrived and now we’re heading in.

What Happened On “Teeth In The Bone?: We begin with a screen graphic telling us we’re getting started at the Port Of Los Angeles. Robert Darden is checking shipping containers and then leaves. He arms himself and calls his wife to send good luck wishes to his son.

He meets up with Gabriel but it’s an ambush. He’s outnumbered and we get a chase sequence. We think he’s escaped but he’s shot and killed in broad daylight.

Next we get Nathan Blythe from the FBI in a helicopter. Everyone is present except Meachum and Oliveras. We catch up to Meachum who is in a prison yard and gets attacked. He goes to medical and we discover he’s been undercover for nine months. He’s being pulled to join a federal task force. Oliveras is tied up in a Korean drug house. She escapes, beats up her captors and we discover she’s also undercover with the DEA and is getting called to the task force.

At the offices Blythe introduces the team (He’s actually worked with Meachum before) and they’re there to find out why Darden was murdered days after receiving $200K. The operation is “underground” meaning the team can’t tell anyone. And Oliveras has heard of Meachum, who left an acquaintance of hers just days before a wedding.

Blythe and Shepherd (the team’s hacker) go to speak with Darden’s widow. Shepherd attempts small talk but Blythe shuts her down. At the house, Darden’s widow denies he took bribes and Shepherd finds her son crying on the bed. They’re both kicked out after the widow breaks down.

In a separate cars, we Oliveras and Bell and Meachum and Finau getting to know each other. All four arrive at Darden’s offices. They get mixed reviews but suspect his co worker Jim Talbot who acts like a jerk during his interview.

At the office, Shepherd is able to do some surveillance video eagle eye work and get a look at Darden’s killer, Ceasar Murillo. Right when Meachum and Finau get to the door another man opens fire. They burst, knocking him down in the process, while Oliveras stops a lady before she can stab Meachum.

We’re then introduced to Kubler, who tells Blythe he thinks Oliveras is an addict that has figured out the system.

The team then takes a second look at Darden’s finances and determines one his contacts, Spellman, may have been privy to his finances. When the team arrives he flees but is eventually caught when Meachum crashes into his car. Meachum and Oliveras eventually get him to break during an interrogation that he didn’t know they were going to kill Darden.

Blythe orders Bell to break into Spellman’s cellphone while he takes Shepherd out into the field again. This time, Blythe warns Shepherd about field work. But only before he tells Darden’s widow that her husband was a hero. We also get some time to learn that Drew’s son was killed in a drunk driving accident and his little league team salutes him when he arrives to their game.

At a bar, Oliveras researches her fellow task force teammates just before going into the bathroom to possibly do drugs, and Meachum is at a doctors appointment where we discover he has a substantial brain tumor. His doctor tells him to live out the rest of his life in peace but Meachum refuses.

We head back to the office where we learn that Blythe had Meachum undercover with Nazis and the mission was successful because of him, which is why he brought him back after they had a falling out.

Bell cracks the phone and the team gets a lead at the port. They all head out and we get a big shootout at the port. During the shootout, Meachum saves Oliveras by killing Ceasar Murillo, and Blythe spots a security vehicle fleeing early. After the fighting Bell discovers the shipping containers were full of radioactive materials.

This is a terrorist plot to trigger a nuclear event in Los Angeles.

Trivia and Observations:

It’s a Jensen Ackles joint but we’re beginning with Milo Ventimiglia from another 2000s hit “Heroes”.

This is the second Amazon Prime show to kill a cop in the opening sequence. The one season and done “On Call” did the same. That was a good show.

Good to see Eric Dane. Another longtime star dating back to his “McSteamy” days on Grey’s Anatomy. Sadly, he’s recently been diagnosed with ALS.

Yeah, that’s Uli Latukefu from “Young Rock” up there. That was a fun show. Happy to see him working. He’s 6’5 if you’re wondering.

There is definitely some Soldier Boy in Meachum. That is not a compliment but a big positive for this “The Boys” fan.

Yeah, that was “Fuel” by Metallica. Gen X viewers like me probably loved that needle drop.

Quotes:

Meachum (to Oliveras): “I’m going to share something with you. Rachel looks a lot like her sister at 2:30 in the morning.”
