Squid Game: Yes, The Front Man Was Sad When Gi-Hun Died

Squid Game is officially in the books, and the sprint of suspense spared no drama in it’s finale, with Gi Hun (Player 456) making a noble self sacrifice to ensure that baby 222 would win the games.

Many wondered if The Front Man (In-ho) was sad to see his nemesis and short term ally dead at the end of the series.

Yes, he was.

We learn this from the Netflix special Squid Game: The Conversation which autoplays after the finale. It’s an add on, and us viewers are notorious for not watching these specials for important answers.

In the special Lee Byung-hun says his Front Man felt a kinship with Gi Hun, and actually wanted to see if the psychological journey that he took was similar to his when he played the games.

There is plenty of proof in the actual show as well. The Front Man gives Gi Hun the knife and an opportunity to win by killing all of the other players in their sleep. He was rooting for him. Byung-hun also uses his body language to show some remorse which is evident even when he’s wearing his mask and visits his body afterwards.

Then there is the actual journey to Los Angeles to give Gi-Hun’s daughter his fortune. The special recognizes that trip as “keeping a promise”. Promises seldom mean anything if you don’t at least respect the person your doing it for.

As we say good bye to the show (for now, I see you Cate Blanchett), it’s important that viewers get some emotional closure to really illustrate how great this journey was.
