The Studio: Yes, “Demolition Man” Was Also A Commercial For Taco Bell

If you love movies and television, you should be watching “The Studio” on Apple TV. While I was too busy to cover it week to week earlier this year, I’ve had the chance to catch up, and one mention of an old film brought up some happy memories, and a valid point by one of the show’s characters.

Demolition Man was a 1993 action super film that starred an already legendary Sylvester Stallone and a gentlemen who went on to make quite a few action hits himself, you may have heard of him. Wesley Snipes. Oh, and don’t forget about the Oscar winner and multi generational sweetheart, Sandra Bullock, who made the “real ones” fall in love with her way before “Speed”.

The film is an action movie masterpiece. But turning to the show, Patty mentions a very searing but also valid dig at the film..

“Sly Stallone thought the Demolition Man was an allegory about masculinity and modernism in battle. Was it? It was a 150 minute commercial for Taco Bell.”

While I would argue that the movie is about masculinity and modernism (done very well I might add), the story also exists in a Utopian future where the only restaurant is Taco Bell…

And yeah, it was even pretty wild back then.

It’s unlikely that Taco Bell would survive the “franchise wars” now. Their prices are about as high as everyone else now. Back in the day (old guy phrase) you could eat like a king for 5 or 6 bucks.

Still, I can’t recommend Demolition Man enough. I loved it as a kid. I still love it now. And there are so many other topics in the movie that could provide similar arguments. Seriously, at least three others.

What did you think? Let me know in the comments.
