South Park: Yeah, “Got A Nut” Is An Effective ICE Recruitment Video

The thing we’ve learned about “South Park” over the last almost three decades is that they can do whatever they want. They’re completely out of the realm of being cancelled.

But the blowback from that is, sometimes they’re messaging doesn’t always land the way its supposed to.

I’m talking about the “Got A Nut” episode from this week, where Mr. Mackey is fired after federal cuts to education, and joins ICE to make ends meet. Or get his “nut”.

The show is taking obvious shots at ICE. Including at Homeland Security Secrertary Kristi Noem, who goes John Wick on any puppy she sees, and has a face that runs away when she doesn’t get her Botox.

But the episode is actually an effective recruitment video for ICE. Here’s why.

Because, by making Mr. Mackey the central character here, they’re illustrating a remarkably realistic situation in a cartoony way.

After he’s laid off, Mackey goes to the bank and we learn that he has bills that have got to get paid. ICE is presented as a solution for his troubles and his situation actually improves. He may not agree with the operation but adults understand that keeping a roof over your head is the most important thing. Tell me there isn’t anyone at home who’s isn’t in Mackey’s predicament right now.

And while South Park is grilling Noem, she’s still presented as a pro illegal leader who is funny. It’s not flattering, but its also not the worst South Park could have done to her. These days, most of us recognize getting torched by South Park is a symbol that you’ve made it.

If you’re looking at the scale, you could make a strong argument that South Park could get a “thank you” card from DHS if recruitment numbers rise over the next couple of months.

I’m not sure if that’s what was intended or not, but it could very well be the case.
