Alien Earth: Why The Show Reminds Me of “Poor Things”

“Alien: Earth” premiered this week, and if you haven’t watched it yet, you should. The early episodes have my recommendation.

While there are a lot of references to Peter Pan in the show, including the character we’re going to be talking about now, I believe it also shares elements with another popular story that is far, far different, but also the same in one regard.

A child in an adult’s body.

In “Alien: Earth” we meet Wendy, a hybrid, whose childhood consciousness is transferred from her terminally ill body into the android, synthetic body of an adult woman. wendy is the show’s protagonist, and she’s accompanied by other characters who have gone through the same procedure called “The Lost Boys”.

Now, if you’re here, then you might already know where I’m going with this. “Poor Things”, the dramedy that netted Emma Stone her second Oscar (which also has my recommendation) does something similar.

“Bella” is the brain of a baby, who is transplanted into the body of her mother, who in this case, tried to drown herself but is found by a scientist who performs the procedure. Bella goes on a literal journey of self discovery and as her brain ages, she eventually begins acting like an adult, including some very adult relationships which the movies presents without flinching.

It’s possible that we might see Wendy take this same journey. As herself and the other Lost Boys experience more relationships, and in this case existence ending trauma, you may see them harden and take on different personalities as well.

This is a layer of story that I believe Alien: Earth will eventually explore. And this post isn’t a complaint. Especially, if the show can reach the same kind of existential depth as the very different movie did.

What do you think? Let me know in the comments.
