Twisted Metal: Yeah, That’s A “She’s All That” Reference In The Prom Episode
Cue up “Kiss Me” by “Six Pence None The Richer”.
Of all of the shows to pay homage to one of the most popular 90s teen movies of all time, it had to be Twisted Metal during their super fun prom episode that aired this week.
I’m talking about “She’s All That”.
Gen Xers and older Millenials will recall the 1999 movie where Freddie Prinze Jr makes a bet with the late great Paul Walker that he can turn any girl in his class into the prom queen. They agree that Rachel Leigh Cook’s shy artist will be that girl, and we get an epic guilty pleasure love stories complete with a Fat Boy Slim dance number led by some then little known artist from the time. I think his name is Usher.
And it’s not just Usher. Anna Paquin, Dule Hill, Kieran Culkin, this list just keeps going on and on.
Now, Twisted Metal goes a little darker with it. Sweet Tooth, jealous that his nemesis Mr. Grimm is having fun at the prom, waits for him to hook up with Vermin. He then interrupts their love making to insinuate that they made a bet over her and that she wasn’t “All That”, which ruins their evening. At least before the sleeping gas really ruins their evening.
If you want me to get really nerdy with this, I would say the fake bet is more like “Cruel Intentions” which actually included a sex bet made between Ryan Phillppe and Sarah Michelle Gellar over whether he could hook up with Reese Witherspoon. Another epic teen movie from the very same year.
Just goes to show that Twisted Metal really knows there audience. I’m loving all of it.
