DePere Child Hit In Crosswalk Cements Fact Many Drivers Don’t Care About Or Understand Crosswalks

This story really makes my blood boil. This is because I’m almost hit by a car about once a month while using a crosswalk with bright, blinking lights.

Sadly, a child was hit in De Pere this week. while using a crosswalk. With a crossing guard at the scene (story HERE).

A crosswalk. A crossing guard. And all of the signage involved in a school zone. And a child was still hit.

Many drivers in the Greater Green Bay area either don’t care about pedestrian crosswalks and signals, or don’t know how to approach them. This means pedestrians like this child and myself will always be at risk.

Let’s start with the jerks. The ones who don’t care about the lights and could very well kill someone in the future. They won’t even reduce their speed. They know they’re supposed to stop but refuse to. I’ve been flicked off by these drivers as they speed by. That’s not even the worst part. These bad drivers will tailgate behind drivers doing the right thing and blare their horns at them. These are dangerous people and they should either have their licenses revoked or be put in jail.

Then there are those who don’t know what they’re doing. These are usually the ones who turn into a crosswalk and don’t see the pedestrian walk signal, almost hitting someone in the process. They’ll either apologize or uncomfortably drive away. This happens to me a couple of times a week at Bay Park Square Mall.

We know what the solutions are. Support our police officers. Listen to our crossing guards. And make sure our own houses are clean.

Because we are getting too close to a tragedy here.
