Labor Day: Five Things To Say To Sound Smart About The Holiday

Happy Labor Day! Do you know what that really means? There are a lot of us that don’t.

But we’ll still gather around the barbecue and enjoy each other’s company in the name of America’s working men and women.

Here are some things to say about Labor Day if you want to pretend like you’re down with the cause.

It’s inspired the “rule of eights” and the standard 40 hour work week: Eight hours for work. Eight hours for play. Eight hours for sleep. And that is basically your standard five day work week in the United States. Although many of us do work much more.

People died for it: The holiday became official in 1894 after federal workers were killed during a work dispute. It was part of a piece offering for the working people.

“No White After Labor Day” isn’t really an official holiday thing: Its a gag to run, but the saying is believed to be an inside joke between the well off and those who can’t afford seasonal wardrobes (like myself).

Carpenters vs. Machinists: Both of the trades take credit for inventing the holiday. We don’t really know who deserves the flowers though. Some of us can’t even explain what a machinist does.

You’ll eat a lot of hot dogs today: We’ll eat 150 million hot dogs on Labor Day weekend. The best hot dogs are grilled by the way.

And there you have it. Five things to pretend like you know what you’re talking about on Labor Day. Kinda.

Do take a moment to love each other on this holiday. It’s tough out there right now.
