WWE: Saudi Arabia Wrestlemania Deprives An American City From Economic Benefit
WrestleMania is headed to Riyadh in 2027. The news came down on Friday afternoon, to a mostly negative response from fans. Pay Per Views in Saudi Arabia often lack the excitement of events in the United States or Europe.
But the news also continues what has been an assault on the American consumer in recent months, that is feels like Stone Cold is running out to hit us with a chair on Smackdown, after he just did it on RAW a couple of days earlier.
A Riyadh Wrestlemania means an American City will miss out on millions in economic development. Millions of dollars won’t go towards “heads in beds” in American cities. Millions of dollars won’t be spent in American restaurants to keep the cooks cooking. Millions of dollars won’t spill over into more created jobs in bigger markets.
Instead we’ll get an indifferent crowd that doesn’t get very loud, and a women’s division that will be oppressed for not one but two of the industry’s biggest nights.
And an American City will watch that economic opportunity go to another country.
Even England or France would have provided one of the best audiences on the planet, and a backdrop for storytelling that propels the WWE’s talent to be their best.
We won’t get that in Riyadh.
And the American consumer will have to pay more for less, with subscription fees only getting higher as WWE shifts to ESPN.
What did we do for these guys to hate the American consumer so much? I’d like to know because we’re paying more for a product, while they’re giving back less to the American economy.
