Ashwaubenon “Camping” Ordinance Shirks Regional Responsibilities To Battling Homelessness

The Village Of Ashwaubenon, who in recent years, has imposed inclusion on friendly matters such as tourism and economic development opportunities, is once again opting out of making contributions to solving the region’s challenges.

In this case, I’m talking about a proposed “camping” ordinance that would prohibit camping in public areas.

Really, it’s an anti-homelessness ordinance (story HERE).

Its true. They are trying to push the embattled members of our community (including veterans) into Green Bay, De Pere, Howard, and other surrounding areas because they don’t want to deal with it.

I’ve seen this before. Next there will be a buffed sidewalk ordinance, where simply existing as a homeless person in Ashwaubenon would be illegal.

Nevermind, that Ashwaubenon is actually contributing to the problem of working individuals struggling to get their lives together in the area.

As the regional hub for retail business for the area, many low income workers can’t even get to their places of employment because of Ashwaubenon’s lack of transportation options on the weekend, constrictive biking ordinances, and their poor pedestrian safety conditions.

Now, they’re simply turning their back on the problems altogether.

But don’t worry. They’ll still be in the reception line for the next big regional event, or development without having to do any of the actual work.

This ordinance will likely pass. But Greater Green Bay and Appleton residents should note.

Ashwaubenon is not doing their part of the work.

And there are real opportunities to get ahead of our challenges. We’ve got good people in the non profit and public safety spaces committed to making progress.

Unfortunately, the Village Of Ashwaubenon can’t be troubled with anything besides vanity ordinances and initiatives.
