Green Bay Should Run Towards USL Opportunity, With Fiscal Responsibility In Mind

The USL wants to come back to the Green Bay area. This is exciting stuff. While American Football is king in the 920, “The Beautiful Game” has a way of allowing a community to grow and succeed in different ways.

I’m happy that Green Bay is going to explore moving forward. But there is one blinking red light that won’t allow me to relax.

We’re going to have to find a stadium for this team. And possibly build one.

And stadiums are municipal budget killers.

In my hometown of Orlando, I saw firsthand what it took to build Inter & Co Stadium, where the Orlando City and Orlando Pride currently play. Local leaders had to plan and budget not only that stadium but the remodeling of Camping World Stadium and a new performing arts stadium too.

Luckily, the team paid for the stadium themselves. It’s very unlikely that will happen this time.

This means that local leaders and concerned citizens will have to imagine what a stadium plan looks like. There are the fun details, like where it can go, and what we can put around it.

But also, how are we going to pay for this thing?

The burden shouldn’t be entirely on the taxpayers. They’ve written books on how teams get regular people like you and me to foot the bill on a playing venue, only for the team to demand more in a couple of years or threaten to leave.

Its early in the process and we still have a lot to learn. But while dreaming of how nice it would be to have pro soccer in Green Bay again, we have to be mindful of the toll it will take on our wallets.
