WWE: Saudi Arabia Royal Rumble Was As Bad As Expected

The only interesting thing to come out of Saturday afternoon, was the concept of WWE trying to outrun a bad product on the strength of pure profits at the expense of the customer.

Because while the Royal Rumble is arguably the most popular pay per view with fans, the WWE deflated the entire concept this year by hosting it in Saudi Arabia. And then they loaded the show with the same force fed narratives that have hurt the promotion for the past several months.

Indeed, the Saudi Arabia Royal Rumble gave us…

A censored women’s rumble: The ladies were once again shoved into body suits, and limited in both expression and ability because of the constraints of the country they were performing for.

No serious surprises: Roman Reigns won. Yawn. Gunther was still a tank. And none of the rumble returns will be anything we’ll remember in 90 days.

A dead crowd: Riyadh treated the rumble like a bad Christmas gift they never asked for. The venue looked empty for most of the show, and the crowd didn’t appreciate what they were watching.

Bad creative decisions: Logan Paul in the final four is more of what we didn’t ask for. Brock Lesnar showed up and got eliminated in an underwhelming outing. And Roman Reigns is another repeat winner that will lead to a predictable road to Wrestlemania.

And I hate that streaming subscribers had to pay more this year with service increases. We’re giving more of our hard earned money for less of a product from an organization that is returning to a time when they really didn’t care what we wanted.

This was one of the worst Royal Rumbles I’ve had to observe in four decades of watching wrestling. I’m sorry it happened and I’m sorry for you having to watch it.
