Cramer, King “Ensuring Benefits for Disabled Veterans Act” Pushes Away Unfair Limitations
Senators Kevin Cramer and Angus King introduced a bill this week that would continue to trim away at nonsensical limitations to the benefits that our brothers and sisters face when trying to get an education after leaving the military.
As it stands, there is a 48 month cap to Veteran Readiness and Employment benefits or VRE, and that time is at risk for being reduced if you use the GI Bill before enrolling in VRE. Cramer and King’s legislation would let veterans access all of their benefits regardless of which order there used in.
“For those who choose to continue their education, the system should be fair and flexible. That’s all we’re asking. No veteran should lose opportunities or benefits simply because of an arbitrary sequencing requirement.” Cramer said in his announcement.
And what underlines the importance of this bill is how little veterans understand about the limits of their educational benefits. There are restrictions that I’m still discovering to this day, and when we get that rejection letter, its like getting a door slammed in your face. And yet another hurdle we face during a critical time when we’re transitioning out of the military.
