Congress Should Pass “Securing Our Streets Act” To Take Action Against Preventable Violent Crime
Solid anti crime legislation has surfaced right here in Northeast Wisconsin with HR 7719 or the “Securing Our Streets Act” sponsored by Congressman Tony Wied.
The reason this is good legislation is because it tackles a problem that communities all over the country are facing, that could very easily be prevented. That problem is repeat offenders of violent crime.
How many horror stories have we seen in the news over the past couple of years that have involved a preventable violent crime? And when you dig deeper into each of those tragedies, how many of those crimes were conducted by offenders who have committed similar crimes before?
The answer is too many.
The bill would allow states more resources for tackling violent crime offenders in the form of grants from the Attorney General. Enough sending resources to revolving door crime sanctuaries.
Some of the requirements include mandatory sentencing enforcement which require violent repeat offenders to serve at least 85% of their sentences.
Tougher pretrial detention that keeps these offenders behind bars. This one is important because it provides peace of mind to the victims they’ve hurt.
And “three strikes” lifetime imprisonment. If you’ve gone to trial three times for violent offenses and have been found guilty three times of violent offenses, then you shouldn’t be a burden to our communities and public safety officers anymore. At this point, you’ve long past caring about other people besides yourself.
The SOS act of 2026 is good legislation that ensures that we’re finally doing something about criminals who make multiple attempts to hurt people.
