Harry Potter: First Trailer Is Impossible To Root Against
We’ve gotten our first look at the HBO Harry Potter series, and the trailer looks..
Pretty strong.
It passed the first test, that’s looking good: Our new Harry, Ron, and Hermione give off the same wonderful energy that Radcliffe, Grint, and Watson did when we met them so many years ago. Hogwarts looks better than I imagined and it no doubt feels like I’m there again for the first time in over a decade.
The emotion is there: The Dursleys are still jerks and even understanding their arc, I’ll still have no problem rooting against them. Nick Frost replacing the late great Robbie Coltrane manages to capture that same kind of warm energy. And even who we presume is Molly Weasley hugging her children before they take off for the school year feels special.
There is still plenty of mystery: There is no evil to be seen in the trailer. No, I don’t count first year Draco. His story is far too complicated for him to fall into that column yet. We probably won’t get a look at Quirinus Quirrell until the show actually airs. And if you’ve read the books, we won’t get a full Voldemort for a couple of years.
And speaking of chronology and release date: The name of the first season is The Philosopher’s Stone. This is going to be a long journey if each season is a book. But there is enough material and then some to fill an HBO season.
And another busy Christmas: HBO is dropping this thing on Christmas. That means it will be up against Avengers: Doomsday, Dune: Part III, and Jumanji 3. Save your money.
