The Drama: Controversy Should Compel, Not Deter Potential Viewers
Let’s be transparent. I haven’t seen “The Drama”. But I was intrigued by the Robert Pattinson and Zendaya A24 movie for the very reason I’m writing this post.
Something seemed very “off” about the characters the two stars play in the movie.
In the trailer, the two play an engaged couple that seems terribly uncomfortable at the fact that they’re getting married, instead of being completely in love like most. The spot teases the twist but doesn’t spoil it, leaving viewers on the hook to find out what actually happens next.
Spoilers incoming:
We learn during a “Truth Or Dare” type segment that Zendaya’s character considered carrying out a school shooting but ultimately backed out.
The rest of the movie has to deal with the characters coming to terms with the reality not everyone is who we might believe them to be.
Now, I’m not sure how the film deals with the delicate subject matter.
But this is an A24 joint. You guys know this film is going to be anything but traditional.
And that means, this film isn’t supposed to be a run of the mill late 90s Sandra Bullock rom-com. It’s supposed to be different.
And it’s about watching this very capable cast bring forward a complicated story that I’m not sure a lot of other actors in their prime could carry out.
Now, there is the possibility that this could simply be a bad movie. There is always a chance “The Drama” could swing for the fences with this controversial creativity and miss the ball altogether.
But if you wanted to see the movie before the controversy, I think you still should. Because we could still find what we’re looking for here.
