Getting Into Politics: Looking for the conversation with voters

If you want to be truly great at grassroots politics, you have to truly want to talk to and understand the voters. The formula isn’t complicated. Nothing will educate you faster than finding out what the people want from their elected officials.

But wouldn’t you believe it? There are people that don’t do what they can to talk to the voters. These are mostly lazy political temp workers who are just there to collect a paycheck.

You’re not going to be like that though. Otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this post. You’re here because you want to do right by your campaign and you want to win.

You do that by seeking out the conversation with the voters. This means going where you have to go and waiting when necessary to talk to them.

This is done by knocking on doors when voters are most likely to be home. This is usually the window between when they get home from work and the dinner hour, along with weekends. If you’re trying to reach retirees, this window can open up quite a bit on weekdays.

You can also do things during the canvass to increase your chances of reaching the voters. This means waiting for the voters to come to the door. Not being afraid to reach out to them when they’re in their yard. Taking every opportunity possible to stretch every visit to every door as far as possible.

This is especially true if you’re the candidate. Nothing works as well as personal attention. Not mail. Not radio. Not even TV.

If you make every attempt to make these voter conversations happen, you’ll be in great shape come election day.
