Update: Guys. This show just took a terrible dive after it’s premiere episode. Maybe it should have just been a movie because Minx has lost any coherence of what it’s trying to be. Ugh. Skip it.

“Why is it that guys can go to a dozen places to see *expletive* but girls can’t go to one place to see a *expletive*”

And so goes the “ah ha” moment of “Minx” the 1970s magazine dramedy that dropped on HBO today. And it manages to entertain rather nicely and uniquely.

Ophelia Lovibond stars as Joyce who originally wanted to publish “The Matriarchy Awakens” but after every magazine publisher in California turns her down, it’s Doug (played by fan favorite Jake Johnson) who gives her a chance in his porn magazine empire. Except he wants to publish Joyce’s message next to pictures of naked guys.

So we’re off to produce “Minx” a male nude feminist magazine.

The show is well done, but Lovibond and Johnson are what really makes this story fun. Joyce is trying to get her message printed, while Doug is trying to sell magazines, and the tug of war is going to be “a thing” moving forward. And that’s a good thing because it’s entertaining and even thought provoking at times.

There is a lot of “junk” flying around the screen though. Seriously. HBO has never been shy about nudity, but it’s more prevalent here than a lot of it’s other programs. It’s got more than “Euphoria” and that is a lot of naked people. That might be a negative to you or it might not be. Just be careful where you watch it.

So, yeah, I”m going to stick with Minx for now. If anything it will be a much needed shot in the arm to programming that has been pretty heavy on the drama lately.
