What the card actually says:

Equipped Creature gets +1/0

2 (red mana) Sacrifice Lightning Spear, it deals 3 damage to any target.

When wielded it begs to be released

Analysis: That is correct, Lightning Spear is not only a buff for your creature, but when you sac it, it can do direct damage. The +1 one is cool but adding trample is a biggie. Then you get the chance to sac it when you need to and that can get you over the hump during a key moment of the game, especially when you’re in a tough fight and you’re looking for something, anything to finish your opponent off. And you get this versatility for only two mana with an equip cost of one. You don’t have to equip it to sac it if you need the direct damage in a hurry either.

How it feels when you play it: Listen, it’s an artifact not a Blasphemous Act. It’s not going to change your life. But in that last scenario I mentioned, when you’re scraping for damage and you reveal that you can sac it for damage, not a lot of opponents will be expecting that. That can be a pretty wild moment in the game.

Conclusion: Lightning Spear is terrific. It’s cheap versatile burn that gets the job done. If you’ve got the space, or need equipment for a Voltron deck, it’s not a bad way to go.
