Going Dutch: What the unfunny new comedy gets wrong about the Army

Listen, I get it. Military fiction, especially comedies, aren’t supposed to be exactly accurate.

But comedies, are supposed to be funny.

And in regards to both, “Going Dutch” the new FOX comedy, is off to a lousy start.

Denis Leary, plays Colonel Patrick Quinn, an officer who gets on the wrong side of a superior, and finds himself in command of the “most unimportant Army base” in Stroopsdorf, Amsterdam.

This writer had the privilege of serving multiple years in Europe for the greatest military in the world. This show gets a lot of things wrong.

They treat Colonel Quinn like a bum, even though a colonel walking into a room is reason to stop everything in the military.

They constantly salute indoors, which drove me nuts.

Quinn is always in a dress uniform. An occasion usually reserved for formal affairs. Uniforms on this show are a travesty, even during the moments they’re attached to goofball characters.

And who knows how they’re butchering Dutch culture.

The biggest fail may be that the first episode isn’t funny. Not even Leary can pull this comedy out of the dirt. Comedy veterans Danny Pudi and Catherine Tate are also wasted.

FOX comedies haven’t been good in sometime. That’s why outside of Animation Domination, they seldom succeed. We’re talking about the network who gave “Welcome to Flatch” two seasons.

Military comedies can work. And if you’re laughing, then you don’t care about accuracy. Look at the old Hot Shots! movies.

But “Going Dutch” is off to a very, very tough start. Let’s hope they can straighten it out.
