On Call: Harmon winning the Wal Mart fight was a defining “hero” moment
Currently enjoying my first season ride along with Harmon and Diaz on Prime Video’s “On Call”, and episode four continues to deliver the suspense and action that has been sorely missing from a lot of these cop shows.

In the episode, Harmon gets a lead on Maniac, the coward who shot Delgado in the opening moments of the series. She leads a raid of cops into a hotel, and in a sequence that looked spectacular down the lens of a body cam, takes out a couple of bad guys in the process.
We find maniac who decides to run, and Harmon chases after him into an abandoned Wal Mart. This was teased in the season sizzle reel, and it made me scared for our protagonists.
Out of nowhere Maniac tackles Harmon, straddles her and begins punching her in the face. It couldn’t get any worse for her.
But, as her body cam is knocked off and sent spinning out of view, she finds her backup piece in her boot. And after taking a few more punches, she puts the revolver to Maniac’s head. She won.
She considers pulling the trigger. Maybe a few of us wish she had. But she doesn’t as back up arrives.
This was an important moment for “On Call” and cop shows in general. You had a sympathetic protagonist, being over powered by a larger thug, and taking a thorough beating.
But she gains the upper hand. And while viewers would have been fine if she would have taken him out (goodness knows he deserved it), she doesn’t. The aftermath feels like we took the punches with her, and we’re exhausted as the credits pop.
It was the first time I found myself audibly rooting for Troian Bellisario, who is doing some good work here.
Excellent television.
