Sara Holloway and her son Devin continued their hellish journey to Crooks Springs in episode four of American Primeval on Netflix, with seemingly the entire universe (along with a streak of bad decisions) against them making it to their destination.

In episode four, we learn about why Sara has a $15,000 bounty on her head that currently has some bounty hunters on her trail.

It turns out she was being abused by the man she was with in Philadelphia..

“The man in Philadelphia.” Sara begins to Issac “He put his hand on my throat and choked me until I fainted. And every morning that I woke up. It was a curse. When he did it to Devin, I killed him. And Issac, I would do it again.”

It’s a tragic explanation, but not an unforeseen one. What does make it even more troubling, is that she’s telling Issac this just a short time she was raped by those mutants at the camp an episode ago.

And things don’t get much easier for the Holloways. A few minutes later, we see Devin get thrown off by the lame horse and then kicked several times afterwards. He’s taken to a cabin, where the damage to his leg is severe and Issac has to take drastic measures as the episode comes to an end.

American Primeval remains a joyless but disturbingly powerful watch.
