“Until Dawn” trailer gives us “Happy Death Day” meets “Cabin in the Woods”

The “Until Dawn” trailer dropped this week, and it doesn’t look half bad. But viewers might sense that some of the curves of the plot seem familiar.

It feels like a mix of “Happy Death Day” and “Cabin in the Woods”.

In the trailer, we see a group of friends make their way to a haunted country house, and then they each get murdered. But they wake up the next night. There does appear to be a limit. No one has made it past 13 nights.

“Happy Death Day”, which gave us two enjoyable time loop movies, did the same thing (still waiting on that trilogy ender).

“Until Dawn” does offer some variety. Each night, it’s a different kind of monster that hunts down our characters. “Happy Death Day” gave us the same cherub faced killer both times.

But the variety of murderers, lends it self to “Cabin in the Woods” where there was a conspiracy of monsters being jailed in a secluded location. It’s also a pretty fun movie.

Then, of course, there is the “Until Dawn” video game, which is popular and should be able to outrun the scrutiny of movie nerds like myself.

With no big stars attached to the movie, “Until Dawn” will have to rely on the same key concept that made the other two movies cult favorites.

It will have to make sure we have fun watching it.

And in that regard, we can be a little hopeful. The trailer is an interesting watch and the movie doesn’t seem to take itself too seriously.

You can watch the trailer below.
