Kudos to De Pere leaders for fiscally responsible choice on Southern Bridge
One of the pitfalls of projects on everything from remodeling your bathroom, to the major community construction we’re about to discuss, are rising costs. It seems like the price is always going up on something. And we always end up throwing in more money at the end than we ever expected to.
Which is why I’m taking a moment to thank De Pere leaders for not opting for a design improvement on a bridge that would have cost up to $1.5 million dollars more, for an “enhanced flared” design none of us would probably even notice (story HERE).
To back pedal for a moment, De Pere and Brown County are collaborating on a bridge that will cross the Fox River. There was a design decision that had to be made with options ranging from $450K to $1.5 million. They wisely opted for the $450K option.
“Well, isn’t that what they’re supposed to do, Frank?”
Yes. But an alarmingly high number of local government bodies all over the country, get stars in their eyes when they’re presented with the flashier, high costing designs. Then they’re hearing noise from advocates for these projects that scoff at a reasonable option, and then try to cultivate the culture of “skyline envy” among the municipalities.
Well, on this occasion, De Pere isn’t going for it.
And the good news, is that this is grant money, and the funds rolled over here will be used on another transportation project in the area.
A rare victory for fans of local government that appreciate that the most expensive and flashiest option isn’t always the one that’s right for a community.
