Fantastic Four First Steps: Five First Impressions from the first Trailer

That’s some blog post title. Isn’t it?

But indeed, the first trailer from the “Fantastic Four: First Steps” dropped today, and the reception has been leaning slightly positive. The movie is taking some big risks as they try to finally land a comics “First Family” franchise that can go longer than two movies.

Here are some first impressions from watching the trailer:

Positive: The retro vibe is working, and it’s getting some comparisons to “Wandavision” which I believe are accurate. I was worried about the film going into the past, but they’re getting it right here. It looks great.

Positive: Vanessa Kirby and Ebon Moss Bachrach are looking great early on. And that’s important because The Thing is mighty hard thing to get right in the eyes of many, because he looks so abstract. Kirby is the acting heavyweight here and I think she could give us a wonderful Susan Storm.

Positive: Galactus is solid so far, and you can read my last post again to quantify it. Galactus is so awkward looking, and after MODOK, I’m still skeptical. But this is a promising start.

Negative: No Silver Surfer in our first glimpse. I get it. They’ve got to save some things. But for the die hard comic fans, this is yet another difficult to achieve character, with a big following.

Negative: Pedro Pascal continues to be overexposed. Goodness, I wish Hollywood would move beyond the same 10 actors they have playing everything these days. Yeah, I’ll move on eventually, but Reed Richards has so much potential in the MCU, and it’s a Pascal fodder part. I’m tired of actors who gets these iconic roles and then just go through the motions and give us a forgettable performance.
