“You’ve Got Mail” is on Hulu, and Hanks and Ryan are still so perfect together

Every once in a while, the movies delivers a couple with a chemistry so perfect, you can’t watch them once. A recent day example would be Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, who have starred in three films together as respective love interests.

It’s time for a new TV. Buy one on Amazon HERE!

In the 90s, that was Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, who also starred in three movies together, “Joe versus the Volcano”, “Sleepless in Seattle”, and the film we’re about to discuss, and one of my favorite rom coms ever “You’ve Got Mail”.

The Nora Ephron helmed film (she also did ‘Seattle’) stars Hanks and Ryan as business rivals, with the former an owner in a big box book store that is putting all of the smaller stores out of business. In this case it’s Ryan’s “Shop around the corner”. In person and in the media, they’re enemies.

But, in a relationship built over email, they’re perfect matches for each other, exchanging messages that shares their similar interests and passions. Using screen names, they have no idea that they’re enemies in real life.

And watching them try to figure this out, is a romantic story that is still so wonderful all of these years later.

Ryan and Hanks fence each other perfectly with dialog. They’re both good people. They just don’t like each other. And when they finally start moving forward, you understand why audience absolutely adored these two together.

With a cast that also includes Dave Chappelle (I know. Right? He’s great here), Parker Posey and Greg Kinnear, and anchored by Ephron’s sets, wardrobe, and dialog, it’s really something special.

If you want a love story that beautifully managed to communicate romance during the dawn of the internet, this is your movie. It’s really something special.
