You can’t find the Gary Oldman video of him reading R. Kelly anymore

When you love television, movies, and books, you’ll frequently go back and check on things that made you laugh. Recently, for me it was Gary Oldman reading R. Kelly’s book “Soulacoaster” on the Jimmy Kimmel show back around 2012.

If you go looking for that video now, you won’t find it.

The articles are still there, but the YouTube embed says it’s not available anymore.

That’s unfortunate because the segment is funny. You have the legendary Oldman, dressed like he’s going to the Oscars, reading an excerpt of the book that remembers a meeting between R. Kelly and Tupac. It’s terrific.

Now, obviously a lot has happened in the last 12 years. Even though the R. Kelly controversy has rumblings that stretch back decades, it has since hit the mainstream, including that wild Gayle King interview that took place about six years ago.

It’s quite possible that Jimmy Kimmel didn’t want the video up anymore. It’s also more possible that Gary Oldman didn’t want it there anymore. It also could have been a mutual decision.

But the other video that features Benedict Cumberbatch reading the lyrics to an R. Kelly song on the Jimmy Kimmel show is still up and gets comments to this day.

Aside from R. Kelly himself, there aren’t any fingers to point here. It falls on the fans of media to capture anything they really enjoy because the popular culture landscape is always changing. Mind you, 30 years ago, there wasn’t a bigger R&B singer making music than R. Kelly.

And the world has much bigger problems than the whereabouts of a 13 year old video of Gary Oldman reading a book as a joke.

But know you’re not alone in wondering what happened to it. And if you do find it, let me know in the comments.
