Sturgeon Bay residents concerned about development must get loud to ensure smart growth

A recent story about the inevitable development of Sturgeon Bay resonated with me (story HERE). After all, sloppy and uncalculated growth fueled by greed in Central Florida where I’m originally from, has ensured problems like traffic, overcrowded schools, and a skyrocketing cost of living will be around for the foreseeable future.

But the residents of Sturgeon Bay have a unique opportunity. They can take control now and ensure that if development must disturb their beautiful community, it can be done their way.

It all starts with getting involved in local government. And it has be an ongoing effort.

The sad truth about real estate and development is that they have an extremely powerful lobbying presence with local government. They write campaign checks that keep the people they want in power. In exchange, those supported public officials greenlight their developments. And all of this moves so quickly, that concerned residents aren’t even aware that it’s taking place until it’s too late.

Next thing you know, you’ve got hundreds of apartments sprouting up everywhere. And they don’t bother waiting for the infrastructure to develop, so you get flawed growth that leads to headaches for those who lived there beforehand.

So, what do you do?

Well, find out who is the planning and zoning body in your community and attend their meetings. If they’re making bad recommendations, then get on the phone with your alderman. Tell your neighbors. Voice your concerns on social media.

Get loud. It’s the only way to get this right. And you’ll only get one shot.

Not all development is bad. But it must run parallel to the will of the people.

It’s that philosophy that will ensure Sturgeon Bay remains the community so many are concerned about right now.
