Congress should support Bipartisan Nunn, Magaziner bill combating Veterans suicide

The most important time in a veteran’s life is the transition period between leaving the military and beginning their new start in the civilian world. I was lost during my own transition and never really recovered.

A bipartisan bill named the The Daniel J. Harvey and Adam Lambert Improving Servicemember Transition to Reduce Veteran Suicide Act was named after two Marines who took their own lives within a year of leaving the military.

It’s a bipartisan initiative from Representatives Zach Nunn and Seth Magaziner. The measure would require DOD and VA transition programs to increase mental health support for transitioning service members.

The annual VA suicide report is always a troubling time for me. This is because the numbers can never be too low enough. Our brothers and sisters can’t stop taking their own lives because we’re lost.

This is because we’re alone after we leave the service. We don’t fit in at work. Our families and friends have moved on with their lives without us and we don’t fit in at home either. And all of the benefits we’re supposed to be receiving from the Department of Veterans Affairs are tied up in red tape.

This legislation will be a lifeline to veterans and could possibly save some lives.

The legislation has been introduced before but was never signed into law. Call your lawmakers and make sure it reached the President’s desk.
