Bipartisan HUDVA act needs passage to ensure Disabled Vets get help they need to secure housing
One of the glitches involved in benefits earned by veterans is that they often unintentionally work against each other. Especially when it comes to disabled veterans, whose disability income often disqualifies them when they need help with necessities like housing.
The bipartisan Housing Unhoused Disabled Veterans Act would solidify a correction of policy by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, to ensure disability income does not disqualify veterans for benefits such as the Housing and Urban Development-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Program more commonly known as HUD-VASH.
The group of Senators include Katie Britt, Alex Padilla, Dave McCormick, and Ruben Gallego. My longtime readers might remember Gallego from when I used to cover his visits to Orlando with my old blog. He’s a veteran himself.
The HUDVASH voucher system has a lot of problems. But first you actually need to qualify to even be in the realm for potential help. This legislation will do just that.
Of course, the problems with veterans homelessness extend further. Even if you endure the long wait to get the voucher, you still have to find a landlord to accept it. In Orlando, veterans were turned down all of the time when they presented vouchers.
But the program can and has worked in other regions. Don’t believe the communities that have told you they’ve eliminated veterans homelessness. It still very much exists.
It’s fortunate that we’ve got a group of senators across the spectrum of political ideology, that haven’t lost their focus in ensuring all of our brothers and sisters have a place to call home.
