The Last Of Us: Big Death May Have Lost The Show Some Viewers

Here we are a couple of days since the second episode of season two of “The Last Of Us” on HBO, and viewers are still reeling from the big death.

And why shouldn’t they? We lost Joel in one of the worst ways imaginable. To a golf club and a detestable Abby, who still killed him after he saved her life.

The problem is that it might have lost the show some eyeballs as well. This depends on how seriously you take the social media feedback with many viewers swearing off the show afterwards.

Now, there are two types of viewers that watch The Last Of Us.

There are the gamers like myself who knew this was coming. Although, I can tell you that the knowledge didn’t make the scene any easier to watch. And I have to add that I’m going through extreme Pedro Pascal fatigue. I’m sick of seeing him everywhere. Still, it was very unpleasant to watch.

Then there are the non gamers. Your regular fans who are watching HBO Sunday Nights like they have been for years. They didn’t see this coming.

Those are the ones we might lose.

Now, the last time we were this upset was the “Red Wedding” on “Game of Thrones”. I didn’t read the books, and to this day that is still one of the toughest scenes to watch in the history of television. I stayed around for vengeance. And the cast was so big that the scene didn’t involve any of my favorite characters.

The Last Of Us cast isn’t that big. And some fans have turned on Ellie for various reasons (Ironically, Bella Ramsey was also in GOT).

None of this should be considered a danger to the show. They’ve already been renewed for season 3.

And Kaitlyn Dever, who’s been great for a few years now, is impossible to ignore as Abby. Fans complained that they Katniss Everdeened’ Abby in their casting, but when you’ve got talent like Dever, you move forward. It doesn’t matter.

But some people have rage quit the show. They could come back. Sundays are pretty quiet right now without the NFL.

If viewership does drop, showrunners will have to wonder if they made the right decision.
