North of North: E1S1 Top Of The World Recap

Alright, TV fans. North of North has already been approved for season 2 by Netflix. Let’s do a watch to see what all of the fun is about. Here we go!

What happens in episode one?: We meet Siaja from Ice Cove, Nunvut in the Arctic Circle. Siaja defines herself as a modern Inuk woman. She got married young and started a family but feels trapped and is pledging big changes for the new season. There is a big spring festival taking place and Siaja decides to shoot her shot with Helen, the local leader, for a job helping her but is immediately rejected. She does get a greenlight for a petition but is interrupted by her husband Ting to go seal hunting, and is told that they’re adopting another child.

During the hunt, Siaja falls in the water and has a vision in the freezing water of Nuliajuk the sea goddess swimming towards her. To make matters worse, Ting calls her an embarrassment to her face. She decides to get drunk and go to a party where she meets a consultant named Alistair and makes out with him. Kuuk interrupts and gives Siaja her completed petition, while Alistair looks annoyed.

At the festival awards ceremony Ting and Siaja win seal hunt king and queen, but Siaja refuses Ting and chews out the entire crowd. When she storms out she runs into Alistair while being chased by her mom.

We learn Alistair is her father. Siaja vomits and pictures Nuliajuk calling her a loser as the episode ends.

Quotes:

Siaja (to her mom): I’m a good housewife. I went from taking care of you to taking care of him.

Nevee (to Siaja): “You’re acting like a white girl with options.”

Siaja (to Lucy): “If you love Ting some much, why don’t you go and sleep with him”

Lucy: “Gross! He’s my cousin.”

Colin: “so hard to keep track of these relationships.

Trivia and Tie-Ins:

That’s “Levitating”, originally performed by Dua Lip around the pandemic, but sung by Riit her while Siaja and her daughter are on the snowmobile.

We get Mary Lynn Rajskub aka my Chloe O’Brian from 24. Hard to believe I’ve been watching her for decades.

We’re lead to believe the town has a population of about 2000 people after Siaja responds to her petition requirement of 500 people as a quarter of the town.

What did you think of the premiere? Let me know in the comments.
