Poker Face: S2E1 “The Game Is A Foot” Recap

Ladies and gentlemen, Charlie Cale is back, and it’s time to go full speed into another season of “Poker Face”. It has been a long two years, let’s not waste anymore time. The first episode of our sophomore season is “The Game Is A Foot”.

What Happened?: We meet Amber who appears to be an aspiring artist, taking care of her mother, Norma, who seems to enjoy belittling her work and is told that she’ll be dead in a couple of weeks as her attorney arrives to work on her will. After confronting lawyer Paul outside, Amber realizes she’s been cut out of the will. A woman named Felicity Price is listed as the new beneficiary.

After going out to meet her Amber realizes Felicity is her identical twin. Felicity tells Amber that their father is dead but Amber doesn’t tell her about the money, instead telling her that Norma is also dead. Amber then alters her appearance to look exactly like Felicity. While Norma is struggling on her death bed, Amber pulls the nurse call button away from her allowing her to die. Amber then lures Felicity out to a cliff and after a struggle, Felicity falls. Amber then leaves a suicide message to complete her scheme to take Felicity’s identity but when she looks for her sister’s body, she a prosthetic leg which would be impossible to fake if someone asked. She then puts Felicity’s body in front of some nearby train tracks and watches as the train mauls her remains.

You get all that?

We finally catch up with Charlie, who’s current job is a parking lot attendant. But she’s not their long, as Beatrix Hasp’s thugs try to take her out, causing her to speed away. They try to kill her again as she’s playing a mummy at a haunted Halloween hay ride. They try again at her apple orchard job but is save by another of the Kazinsky twins, Delia, and we learn all of the identical sister twins worked on a show called “Kid Cop Nights”.

Delia tells Charlie that Norma was an alcoholic who abused the girls and took all of their money. We get word of Norma’s funeral and Charlie decides to drive her to the funeral.

When Charlie arrives, she meets the other two twins, a DJ and a professor, before Amber sends the suicide video. Amber then arrives at the will reading pretending to be Felicity. Charlie immediately realizes Amber is lying about everything. Amber then offers the others $150K to walk away. Delia is the lone holdout and speeds away in Charlie’s car. Her holdout would delay the delivery of the money for years. Amber then takes Delia’s clothes and forge’s the signature on the settlement.

Charlie then runs into Amber faking as Delia, and tells her about her lie detecting gift. Charlie also questions Paul the lawyer, but he’s no help. Luckily the real Delia returns, which makes Amber change back into Felicity.

Still with me?

The real Delia and Charlie eventually connect, just as Paul gives her the check for the settlement Amber forged. Just then, Charlie puts together the foot references from Felicity’s art. Charlie and the group confront Amber with a picture of Felicity wearing her prosthetic foot. Amber tries to trick them but Charlie impales her foot with a Latvian Critics award and Amber finally screams in confession.

During the mop up, Delia says she has enough to buy two orchards and leaves the door open for Charlie to comeback and work for her. The episode ends with another attempt by Beatrix’s hitmen on her life.

Trends and Trivia:

Cynthia Erivo is on top of the world right now with “Wicked” being a hit and the sequel due soon to arrive. And NBC Universal loves her with the casting here.

Jasmine Guy plays Norma. You may recall how great she was as Whitney in the Cosby spin-off “A Different World”.

Charlie compares the identical sisters to “Gremlins” by referring to feeding after midnight.

Charlie brings up dinner theater. One of her mysteries last season involved a theater performance.

With the cops discovering the fingerprints, it’s unlikely Amber would have gotten away with it any way.

Quotes:

Amber: “My mom doesn’t have any friends. She calls charity “Organized malingering”.

Kid Cop: “I don’t know where I end and the Crystal the drug mule begins. Butt munch.”

Charlie Cale: “My favorite episode is when Kid Cop faces off against the Zodiac Killer.”

Delia and Amber: “Leave the keys in the car. Nobody ever comes here.”

Paul: “Kid Cop is huge in Indonesia.”

Police Officer: “You can’t expect a human foot to just stay on the beach and have nobody take it nowhere.”

Charlie (after realizing the fifth twin): “Another one. They got to stop feeding these things after midnight.”

Deliva (about “Footloose”): “It’s like the smallpox of movie songs. I blame Bacon.”
