Green Bay College Students Bullied By UWGB Tuition Hikes And St. Norbert Cuts
One of the biggest regrets of my life is that I never really had a true university experience. It was also a costly decision that is a major factor as a struggling veteran in Northeast Wisconsin.
Which is why it’s both upsetting and depressing to see that our institutions of higher learning are putting Green Bay college students through the ringer, both with tuition hikes and program cuts over the past year.
We’ll start with UWGB who will raise tuition by 4% after the Universities Of Wisconsin Board Of Regents greenlit the hike, it’s third in as many years. A slight “pulling of the punches” was UWGB opting out of a 5% hike but we can’t forget that college is already out of reach for so many young people out there as is. This hurts.
Then we have St. Norbert’s, who we’ve discussed before, who just went ahead and started cutting majors (story HERE) turning their graduates into occupational orphans, without their alma mater no longer participating in their chosen field of study.
Can these kids catch a break? Apparently not. They’re getting tied up in the red tape of poorly ran operations.
And this makes the process even more difficult for those who have already started their journey. We’re financially moving the goal posts back.
Nobody wins here except for the administrators who will no doubt continue to do well.
It’s pretty sad. Most of the college students in Green Bay are good kids. You’ll see them studying in coffee shops and participating in civic programs. They’re doing their best.
It’s unfortunate that we’re the ones who aren’t doing more for them, and that we keep inventing ways to take more when we should be giving more.
