Paramount, UFC Deal Offers Combat Sports Consumer Relief After WWE News
In a deal that will make fans of combat sports with a budget smile, Paramount has announced a deal with UFC. All of the MMA giant’s events will be featured on Paramount Plus for the standard subscription price (story HERE).
This is a relief after the devastating news that WWE would be moving their premium live events from Peacock to ESPN’s streaming service. The subscription difference between the two is about $20. A hike of almost three times what we’re currently paying (story HERE).
Now, I’m not dancing in the sunflower fields yet. It’s almost a certainty that Paramount Plus will raise their fees as well, although it likely won’t be as drastic as what ESPN and WWE are doing.
If you’re a UFC fan, its a reason to be stoked for sure. There are a lot of UFC events, and with Paramount’s marketing muscle behind them, the sport will likely see more eyeballs. More eyeballs equals not only more fans but more advertising revenue. It never felt like ESPN was trying to get me interested in MMA.
And we also can’t forget about the Pay Per View model taking another step towards irrelevancy. Longtime fans of the sport can’t forget getting the buddies together and each chipping in a couple of dollars for what used to be a premium price back in the 2000s. Yeah, I’m not happy about $30 bucks for WWE PLEs but at least we’re not back to that old model either.
UFC belongs on Paramount Plus when you think about it. The audience is a natural fit with the Taylor Sheridan action universe. There will be a lot of opportunity there.
Finally, some good news for our wallets. Enjoy it. Because its not going to happen very often from here on out.
