We all love “Only Murders In The Building” and we’ll all be seated for season 5 when it premieres on September 9th next month. But I watched with concern as the trailer for the latest campaign dropped yesterday.

I was concerned because S4 was by far their weakest season, and it was because they were making up goofy roles for the sake of cramming guest stars on the show. I’m looking at Melissa McCarthy. I’m looking Kumail Nanjiani. I’m looking at Paul Rudd back from the dead.

After watching the S5 trailer, I’m a little more hopeful.

The room is still too crowded. But it’s crowded with Oscar winners.

Renee Zellwegger (2X winner), Christoph Waltz (2X winner), Dianne Wiest (2X winner). Divine Joy Randolph (who was OG cast anyways).

There are others, but they seem to have important roles. Tea Leoni is a love interest. Richard Kind belongs here, just with better writing. And everyone else will hopefully be spaced better.

Meanwhile, I don’t know about you, but the I care about our “core three”. Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. This show can still be award worthy viewing as long as they’re firing on all cylinders. Heck, Jane Lynch was the MVP last season, and her character was dead.

The truth is that the only people that can get in the way of “Only Murders In The Building” are the people who are crammed in there for the sake of being crammed in there.

Otherwise, we can hope for a strong recovery season for our latest murder at the Arconia.
