Quantum Leap: Fumbled Reboot Is Now On Netflix

The original Quantum Leap was one of the first real adult dramas I latched on to when I was a kid. There was just enough human elements mixed into the story of Sam Beckett, who gets caught in the quantum accelerator and jumps through space and time into different people to make the wrongs casted by fate, right.

A couple of years ago, against my wishes, they brought it back. And it was actually worthy. Raymond Lee was great as Dr. Ben Song, who was the scientist who jumped into the accelerator to prevent the death of the love of his life, Addison, played by Caitlin Bassett.

It never got close to the original, but it was still good. And now it’s on Netflix.

I do believe that Quantum Leap fell victim to the chaos of NBC’s scripted programming that is still going on right now, where the peacock’s bloodlust cancelled a slew of programs in one day after a period that came across as muddled indecision at the end of last season. They’ve decided they’re going to roll deep with the NBA and NFL. They’re is sure money to be had with those.

But Quantum Leap did get a few things right. The sets were awesome, the scenarios they put Ben in were different than what Sam encountered, and they managed to make us care, which is rule #1 with any show.

One thing you should probably know now, is that Scott Bakula won’t be showing up. We’ll never really know why the OG never decided to make at least a brief cameo on the reboot, but it hurt the show. Even a short stint might have breathed some more life into the effort. In the end, the ratings were beyond defendable.

The good thing about Netflix is that they do pull more receptive eyeballs. If Blind Spot (good) and Halo (terrible) can find some fans there, then hopefully Quantum Leap will get a look too.
