Movie Review: “The Map That Leads To You” Is A Forgettable But Pretty Tourism Commercial
Prime Video understands that there is still an audience for romance. It’s probably no coincidence that their latest heart tugger “The Map That Leads To You” is premiering the same day a new episode of “The Summer I Turned Pretty” is released.
The result is a movie with good intentions and beautiful visuals, that will zip to the recycle bin of my movie hardrive as soon as I hit ‘publish’ on this post.
Our story features Heather (played here by Madelyn Cline), an on schedule banker with a life plan, who is going on a European vacation with her best girlfriends. On a train she meets Jack (played by “Riverdale” lead KJ Apa) who is on a journey following the stops in his grandad’s journal. Their instant romance takes an unexpected turn that will change both of them forever.
That was a deliberately generic description for a generic love story.
Let’s go positive first. Director Lasse Hallstrom paints a beautiful film here. This is the kind of trip to Europe every young person dreams of taking. It’s been a while since we’ve seen Spain look this good. Almost every face in the movie is also a pretty person.
But you’ll see the story coming from a mile away. Cline and Apa will serve their intended audience just nicely, but the journey never delivers an emotional payoff. And for a romance that’s a major flaw.
Like I opened, The Map That Leads To You should find it’s eyeballs on Prime Video, but as for the film itself, it will only lead you to the next love story that will hopefully deliver a more powerful experience.
