Green Bay Leaders Must Hold Line On Clear Backpack Policy That Works To Keep Kids Safe

This week, there was a discussion at Preble High School between parents and local leaders over how to keep schools safe, after a kid brought in a gun after being bullied (story HERE). There were complaints over the clear backpack policy school leaders implemented, with the intentions of preventing a tragedy before it happens.

But some people just don’t want to be told what to do. Even if they’re wrong. Even if it endangers the lives of children.

These were naysayers that were only activated after the bag policy was put in place. Not after the gun was found. And they were nowhere to be seen in the school safety discussion anytime before then.

Its like cheating on a quiz with an elaborate scheme, only to get caught. With all of the trouble taken to cheat, you could have just studied and past the test honestly. Those are the kind of detractors we’re dealing with.

Not all of the ideas were bad. While metal detectors and dress code changes may also be effective, they’re not immediate like the bag policy is.

Green Bay leaders in the elected, public safety, and education space should stand by the clear bag policy until better solutions are found.

Taking detours only gives the bad parents more time to be bad parents. And it gives the real bad guys, the ones who are cheering for dysfunction in our schools to grow their own illegal enterprises, more space to breathe.

This conversation is ongoing. But until a better solution can be both discovered and implemented, clear bags are still an immediate action that can be taken to avoid an event no community should ever have to experience.
