Appleton Veterans Getting Priced Out Into Homelessness Is A Real Concern; It Happened To Me

The Fox Cities Housing Coalition recently met and discussed recent statistics behind homelessness in the region. And one area stuck out in particular. Homeless veterans in the region that have been priced out of affordable housing (story HERE).

This subject is very important to me because it has happened to me. And it breaks my heart to watch it continue to happen to other veterans.

In my old hometown of Orlando, the property managers and landlords treated veterans poorly. They rejected HUDVASH vouchers and subscribed to the belief that veterans only brought crime and drugs. We weren’t the only group to face hardship, and to this day Central Florida faces a housing crisis fueled by low tourism wages and greedy real estate professionals.

Gratefully, that energy isn’t prevalent in Northeast Wisconsin. They’re are good people trying to help.

We must streamline the renting process for our veterans, while improving and accelerating services meant to secure a roof over our heads. Veterans must also do their part by working, and saving up the resources needed to survive.

Unfortunately, Wisconsin recently took a step back in that regard by closing housing resources meant to help veterans (story HERE). This was all due to political finger pointing in Madison.

Either way, its veterans who lose.

But we’ll end this post on a high note. At least we’re tackling the problem now to help Appleton veterans. And there is another dimension with this tied to transition services that are supposed to keep this from happening to begin with.

Still, we keep working until the problem is solved.
