East New York: Troubling Quinlan arc ruins otherwise solid episode
East New York was new again this weekend, and it’s Regina’s birthday. But before she was heading out, she got a call from prison and the mysterious, Lamont Jacobs, a prisoner who said he had a “breakthrough”.
We then caught up to Quinlan, who was dealing with some rude young kids outside of her building. They made fun of her, poured beer on her shoes and threw fireworks at her, when she asked them to keep it down while she slept. More on this later.
Regina finally made it to her party, which got interrupted by Chief Suarez and the feds. Jacobs, who was also a drug kingpin, had escaped. There were also concerns he could go after Regina. But she deciphered that Jacobs could be getting help from others based on clues in his cell.
And the building actually revolted against Quinlan and wanted her gone. Just because this lady wanted to get some sleep.
Meanwhile, Morales and Killian found a pastor who appeared to be harboring Jacobs, but it looks like their subject slipped out the back. After a chase with some decoys, we also discovered that Lamont attacked his ex and took his son who actually turned his father in the first time.
When Lamont’s ex came to, we learned that they were all in on the breakout and the escape plan. Regina learned of an exchange he scheduled at a pier and confronted him there.
And after all of this drama, Regina talked the big bad Lamont Jacobs into cuffs without incident. Kind of a let down.
To end things, after being treated like junk by her neighbors, Quinlan decided to fix the elevator in the building in an attempt to get them on her side. And they found a bunch of guns in the shaft.
What a lousy lesson.
So, according to the writers, if you shout at police, underage drink, throw fireworks at them, and pour beer on their shoes after you wake them up while trying to sleep, they’ll tear up your violations and fix your building.
Why are we rewarding this? What kind of example are we setting here? Yes, we understand that responsible community policing must be the future, but the show was really tone deaf here.
It ruined what could have been a strong episode.
Anyways, Regina got her birthday party.
