Fleishman is in Trouble: The best show nobody watched comes to a satisfying end
This week, we got to say goodbye to “Fleishman is in Trouble”, a mini series that had some of the best writing and acting on television, but went virtually unnoticed beyond your television connoisseurs.
I don’t want to clutter up this celebration with too much angst over how poorly the show was promoted. Instead, read this article over how this brilliant program reminded me of another genius show in “Atlanta” (show HERE).
But for the finale, we get Libby catching up to Toby to let him know what happened to Rachel and her nervous breakdown. And we learn that Toby had kinda moved on. “She can hire help” was a line that I know was agreed on by some viewers that may not have forgiven her. It was a great, philosophical “fork in the road” scene though.
Then Jesse Eisenberg, who may have done the best work of his career in this series, went to both mourn Karen Cooper and comfort her husband. I can’t find the actor who played the husband, but he did some solid work in very limited time. Great casting.
We also had powerful scenes with Toby and his kids. As we say good bye to the series, we also have to acknowledge the great work of Meara Mahoney Gross who played Hannah, and Maxim Swinton, who played Solly. Both, the discussion over the pressure of religion and Toby praying over his child, along with the return to Vantablack, was a great way to part with the characters. “I don’t want to fix anything. I haven’t even broke anything.”. That’s good stuff right there.
This also served as a great transition to Libby and her family. She discovered that in disappearing, she would have the same obstacles as Rachel as trying to reintegrate. She has strange dreams and arguments with her husband. But she fights, and with a cathartic scene at Seth’s engagement party with Toby, she finds hope and strength.
And the show ends with Libby’s story coming true. Rachel comes to see Toby, and while the ending is doesn’t tie a bow on anything, it does give us a reason to feel good. And that’s what I needed.
The cute scene of Libby finally getting the dance right during the credits made me smile.
This show will be on my “Best of” for 2022. It was that good. The three leads were excellent. I’ll be campaigning for Claire Danes during awards season on this blog. She was incredible.
I’m happy I experienced “Fleishman is in Trouble”. Just excellent television.
